What should I know about the two teams in the Dollar General Bowl?
Appalachian State (8-4, 7-1 in Sun Belt)
The Mountaineers continue to make this whole FBS thing look pretty easy. They’re in a bowl for the third time in four seasons since jumping up from FCS. (In the fourth season, 2014, they couldn’t play in one because of NCAA transition rules.)
Scott Satterfield’s team is steady on both offense and defense with an occasionally explosive passing game to make it more fun to watch. The team lost more games this year than in either of the last two, but it remained one of the better squads in the Group of 5.
This year was the 10th anniversary of App State’s stunning upset at Michigan, when it was still a lower-division power.
Toledo (11-2, 7-1 in MAC)
Without much fanfare, the Rockets had another excellent season. They’ve done little but rack up wins since about 2010, and they kept racking them up during a typically strong 2017.
Toledo’s defense is pretty good for a mid-major, but the primary thing to know about the Rockets is that their passing offense is amazing. Logan Woodside has spent a couple of years as one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the country, and he led an explosive unit again this season. They also have a handful of capable running backs. On the whole, this offense presents a challenge.
