What should I know about the two teams in the Hawaii Bowl?
Houston (7-4, 5-3 in AAC)
The Cougars have slipped a bit from a few seasons ago, when they were the best Group of 5 team in the country and beat Florida State in the Peach Bowl.
Former coach Tom Herman’s at Texas now, and the Cougs’ recruiting isn’t the same dominant enterprise it was around the class of 2016. But, UH was nonetheless solid in head coach Major Applewhite’s first year. The Cougars play stout defense, and that’s kept them competitive even when their offense has lagged.
Houston’s playing in a bowl game for the 11th time in 13 seasons. For more on the Cougars, stop by SB Nation’s Underdog Dynasty, covering the AAC.
Fresno State (9-4, 7-1 in Mountain West)
The Bulldogs have had a weird recent history. They won 11 games under Tim DeRuyter in 2013, which really wasn’t that long ago. But DeRuyter’s tenure cratered after that, and Fresno fired him amid a 1-11 season in 2016.
Enter Jeff Tedford, the former Cal coach, who has executed an impressive turnaround and gotten the program back to a bowl game in Year 1. Fresno’s ultimately used to this, having missed just four postseasons this century.
The strength of this year’s team is an excellent defense, which has limited big passing plays and kept the Bulldogs in games, even when they haven’t scored much.
