What should I know about the two teams in the Holiday Bowl?
Michigan State (9-3, 7-2 in Big Ten)
The Spartans bounced back nicely from 2016’s 3-9 stumble. They found a likely quarterback of the future in sophomore Brian Lewerke, and their defense did the standard Mark Dantonio thing where it clamped down on the run and made a lot of offenses miserable.
The Spartans were Big Ten East contenders until a blowout loss at Ohio State in Week 11, and they figure to be in the mix again in 2018. For now, they’ll bowl for the 10th time in 11 years.

Washington State (9-3, 6-3 in Pac-12)
The Cougars put together another strong year, and now they’ll go bowling for the fourth time in five seasons. Before that, they’d skipped every postseason since 2003.
Their reputation is an offensive-minded air raid team, and that’s largely true. But this year’s team is particularly sturdy on defense. WSU has sprung occasional leaks on defense that have led to explosive carries but has normally been stout. The Cougs haven’t broken all the way through in the Pac-12, but they’re competitive now, and their flag still shows up at College GameDay every week.
