What should I know about the two teams in the Outback Bowl?
Michigan (8-4, 5-4 in Big Ten)
The Wolverines had a lot of the same issues this year that plagued them during Jim Harbaugh’s first two years. And like in those years, this is a good team, but it didn’t quite break through.
Most of the time, Michigan didn’t get consistent quarterback play, and a generally strong running game featuring Karan Higdon wasn’t enough to produce a great offense. Don Brown’s defense was good, but it was always going to step back after losing nine starters following 2016.
But UM’s bowling again, and that’s something. Check out SB Nation’s Maize n Brew for more.
South Carolina (8-4, 5-3 in SEC)
When South Carolina hired Will Muschamp, the Gamecocks were mocked. They were coming off a 3-9 season, and they reached for the Auburn defensive coordinator whose tenure leading Florida ended just a year earlier after never getting off the ground.
But Muschamp has his new program bowling for the second time in two years, playing typically solid Muschamp defense and offense that, while not “good,” is not outside the norm in the current SEC. Things in Columbia are going fine and could get better as Muschamp recruits.
