Almost four months ago, I sat on my couch watching broadcaster Verne Lundquist say goodbye to the SEC, as the broadcaster called his final football game on CBS during last year’s SEC Championship. I wrote in my story about him signing off on the network after 17 years that his words brought tears to my eyes.
We got to hear Verne Lundquist welcome us to ‘SEC on CBS’ one last time
And it was beautiful.

But the basketball gods allowed us to hear good ol’ Uncle Verne welcome us to the SEC on CBS one last time, during the opening of CBS’ broadcast of the Elite Eight game between the No. 4 Florida Gators and No. 7 South Carolina Gamecocks. And it absolutely was beautiful.
After Lundquist announced his final football game from the booth, he reminded us that he would still be on hand to call spring events for CBS, including the NCAA tournament and the Masters.
Many March Madness viewers were surprised to see Verne back behind the mic just three months later. Most of them pleasantly, though everyone has haters.
During his prep for a West Virginia-Notre Dame game last weekend, Lundquist took a basketball straight to the face during warmups. Don’t worry, he was OK!
Let’s soak up these final moments with Uncle Verne, and enjoy every minute.
