Alabama player called for targeting, but not ejected during spring game

Nick Saban wanted to discuss it with the ref.

The Alabama Crimson Tide had its spring game on Saturday, and at the end of the scrimmage, there was a call for targeting. With less than a minute left, Ronnie Harrison was flagged for targeting on a hit he made on wide receiver Calvin Ridley. ESPN’s replay of the hit made it look like the right call.

But of course, Bama head coach Nick Saban wanted to discuss the call with the referee.

The call was upheld, and it backed up the Crimson offense 15 yards. Since this targeting call happened during a spring scrimmage and not a real game, Harrison was able to stay in the game, and he won’t face any suspensions. If this were a real game, Harrison would have been ejected and suspended for the first half of the next game. Luckily, he won’t miss any time against Florida State in the season opener.

Harrison, who starts in Alabama’s secondary at safety, is a junior who finished with 86 total tackles last year. The Tide will need him facing the Seminoles in Atlanta in less than five months.
