It’s May, so we’re still a solid six months away from one of college football’s most heated rivalries, Ohio State-Michigan. But that didn’t stop the drummer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chad Smith, from stirring up the crowd at a recent show in Columbus, Ohio. Smith sang one of the Wolverines’ fight songs, “The Victors,” and the crowd reacted, as expected, with a plethora of boos.
Michigan fan in the Red Hot Chili Peppers keeps trolling Ohio State fans on stage
This rivalry will never die, and that’s completely fine.

Oh yeah, and Smith even played in front of the Ohio State-heavy crowd with a Michigan bass drum.
The drummer told ESPN back in 2012 that his Michigan fandom started when he was living in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. in middle school, which lies north of Detroit and northeast of Ann Arbor.
“I lived in Bloomfield Hills from when I was in seventh grade until I moved to California in 1988. The Michigan helmet is the coolest, still to this day, professional, college, whatever. That helmet is still the coolest. Do they still put the little football helmet stickers on when you do something good? [Eds. note: They don’t.] That used to be so cool. I just thought the helmet itself, the color and the way the stripes, it looks badass. I fell for that early and it was such a big deal. Growing up, Michigan was definitely more popular than Michigan State. Michigan State was the stepchild there for a while, you know. It was all about the maize and blue. They hooked me early.”
He actually sang the fight song at a different Columbus show back in February 2014.
Oh, and he did it again at a Columbus show back in the summer of 2012, too.
Not going to lie, singing a UM fight song when you’re literally playing on OSU’s campus — this last show was held the Schottenstein Center, which houses Ohio State basketball and hockey — is a bold move. But I salute Smith for successfully stirring up the Buckeye crowd when the opportunities presented themselves.
P.S. — did I mention the Michigan-OSU game is in just six months and nine days?
