Florida-LSU’s latest rivalry trolling: The Gators’ choice of 2017 Homecoming game

This rivalry has really taken off over the last year.

The stakes of the looming LSU-Florida matchup just got even bigger, if that was even possible. On Thursday, Florida announced that its Homecoming game this season will be against the LSU Tigers — the same LSU-Florida game that was supposed to be in Baton Rouge this year, until last season’s drama.

At SEC Media Days, LSU coach Ed Orgeron gave the diplomatic response.

This is just the latest development in a rivalry that has gotten more heated than ever before.

The bad blood between the two schools got started after Florida, which was set to host LSU last October, postponed the game due to safety concerns from the impending threat of Hurricane Matthew.

Then came weeks of public, ugly, back-and-forth, open feuding between the programs and Florida being accused by media members of “being scared” to play LSU. Finally, the game was rescheduled to Nov. 19 at LSU, with 2017’s game changing locations in return.

The Gators defeated the Tigers, 16-10. The win was sealed on a goal-line stand:

Florida celebrated by playing LSU’s hype rap song in the locker room. Gator head coach Jim McElwain had some words after the game, too:

“They got some guts; they got some pride,” McElwain said. “They were called out. And you know what amazes me? People call people out when there’s actual tragedy happening. Unbelievable to me.”

It doesn’t end there.

In April, LSU’s spring game was moved inside due to lightning in the area around Tiger Stadium. Florida checked in:

Late last month, Florida beat LSU in the College World Series.

This isn’t the first time LSU-Florida has been a Homecoming game for these two schools — in 2006 and 1996, Florida hosted LSU for Homecoming, and LSU hosted Florida four times for Homecoming between the 1950s and 1970s — but it’s got some added spite to it now.
