A strip club in Starkville is hosting a ‘Hugh Freeze Tribute Party,’ because of course

Yep, you read that headline correctly. A Starkville, Miss. strip club called The Pony is hosting a self-proclaimed Hugh Freeze Tribute Party on Saturday night. A picture of the party’s advertisement began making the rounds on Twitter Wednesday, just two weeks after the resignation of Freeze became official:

The strip club’s owner, Jerry Westlund, has a reason for hosting the event — to get back at the former Ole Miss head coach himself. It all centers around Freeze’s alleged strip club policy, according to Westlund.

“Hugh Freeze was a piece of work to me because he banned his players from coming to my clubs,” Westlund said via USA Today. “He banned them from going to strip clubs. I’m like, I’m sorry at 18 years old you can serve your country. We can give you a gun and send you to a Godforsaken place like Afghanistan, but Hugh Freeze decided they weren’t mature enough to come to a strip club so as the ultimate hypocrite, it’s only appropriate we’d have the Hugh Freeze tribute party.”

Ah, the irony of what Westlund is claiming, regardless of whether or not it’s true. Freeze was asked to resign by Ole Miss in connection with a lawsuit by his predecessor, some suspect phone records, and a call to an escort service.

The strip club owner goes on to, well, point out the parody of this, if indeed Freeze’s ban was actually in place.

“He was willing to go out there and attack people who come to my club,” Westlund said via the newspaper. “If you want to call an escort service, knock yourself out. You could have come to my club and gotten a lap dance and made a friend just as quick.”

This isn’t the only Egg Bowl factor that is involved with Freeze’s resignation. The phone call that ended up as Freeze’s downfall was actually found by a Mississippi State fan, Steve Robertson, who was doing research that was looking at his phone records for a book he’s writing:

But when Robertson saw a phone number with a 313 area code, he was stunned by what he discovered in a Google search. A call made on Jan. 19, 2016, lasting one minute, was made to a number connected with several advertisements for female escorts. Robertson then asked his wife to read him the telephone number again to make sure it was correct. The escort service ads came up again.

Robertson then informed Houston Nutt’s attorney, who is suing Ole Miss, of the call, which was then relayed to the school.

A strip club hosting a Hugh Freeze Tribute Party after his resignation further proves that while the Egg Bowl may not mean much to those outside of the SEC, it’s a huge deal for both schools.
