The No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners begin Big 12 play this week, with a road game against Baylor set for this Saturday night in Waco. On Monday, OU quarterback Baker Mayfield made a reference to singer Katy Perry when asked about his team heading into conference play.
Baker Mayfield jokingly blames Katy Perry for Oklahoma’s 2014 downfall
He’s also officially Team Taylor Swift.

You see, there’s a reason he mentioned this.
In 2014, Oklahoma was in a similar position to where it is now entering Big 12 play. The Sooners were undefeated and No. 4 in the country heading into their conference-opener against No. 25 TCU. It was this week that Katy Perry revealed her affinity for former Sooners’ QB Trevor Knight on ESPN’s College GameDay:
Unfortunately, Perry might’ve jinxed OU with her pick, as the Sooners lost 37-33 to the Horned Frogs and later finished the year with four Big 12 losses to finish third in the conference. Hopefully a similar incident doesn’t happen to Mayfield’s Sooner team this season.
The Sooners are the reigning Big 12 champions for the second straight season, having won it 2015 and last year with their 38-20 win over Oklahoma State. Mayfield’s team is the favorite to win the conference this season as well, seemingly just having to get past Oklahoma State on Nov. 4 to win it.
But wait, we’ve got bonus Mayfield music takes! The quarterback also added that he’s ultimately Team Taylor Swift over Perry, if anyone’s into that kind of thing.
