Wisconsin got the greatest quarterback performance in program history in its last game to dispatch BYU in Provo. On Saturday, the Badgers return from the bye week to begin their Big Ten schedule when Northwestern heads north to the Badger State. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET and will be broadcast live on ABC (live stream).

The Badgers continue their slow grind toward a College Football Playoff berth.

The Badgers have lived up to their preseason top 10 billing, but Saturday’s game against the Wildcats will be the biggest test of their budding season. Northwestern is 2-1 with its only loss coming against a Duke team on the precipice of the top 25. Clayton Thorson will lead a powerful passing attack in Madison, but an opportunistic Wisconsin defense could be the difference Saturday afternoon.

Northwestern at Wisconsin news:
- After running for 438 yards in his first three games, freshman Jonathan Taylor has ascended to the top spot on the Wisconsin tailback depth chart.
In his first three games, Taylor has rushed for 438 yards on 53 carries with five touchdowns. That ties him for 15th in the nation in rushing yards, and his 146 yards per game rank fifth in the FBS.
- Northwestern’s players and coaches will lock arms during the national anthem on Saturday:
Teams are rarely on the field at Camp Randall during the national anthem because it is played early, so no Northwestern players will be faced with the decision to kneel. Regarding walking out with arms linked, Fitzgerald said the players made the decision. Safety Kyle Queiro said they will do it to show “we’re one unified group; we all believe in equality.”
- Paul Chryst is impressed with Northwestern’s consistency:
“Well I think that Northwestern in particular—and credit to Pat and what they’ve been doing—there’s a lot of continuity in the staff and so you’ve got an idea of what they’re going to do offensively, defensively, and special teams,”
- Northwestern’s coverage issues could be a big problem against Wisconsin’s suddenly explosive passing attack:
Northwestern has approximately 2.5 healthy cornerbacks. Montre Hartage and Trae Williams are back, now with a year of experience under their belts. Unfortunately, their backups can’t say the same. With this week’s announcement that Brian Bullock and Roderick Campbell are out for the year, it’s déjà vu for the Wildcats secondary.
Can Alex Hornibrook do it again?
Hornibrook absolutely smoked BYU two weeks ago, completing 18 of his 19 passes and throwing four touchdowns in a Wisconsin rout. The performance was a far cry from the uncertain passer who deferred to the team’s running game while splitting time with Bart Houston in 2016. Having an accurate passing attack will give the Badgers more avenues to beat you — and clear some space for Jonathan Taylor to claim his throne as the team’s latest defense-destroying tailback.
Northwestern at Wisconsin prediction:
The Badgers have a solid home-field advantage at Camp Randall — even if an 11 a.m. local time kickoff doesn’t allow enough drinking time for the student section to be its rowdiest. The Hornibrook-Taylor combo will prove too much for the Wildcats in a Badger victory.
