UMass was supposed to provide the Tennessee Volunteers a tuneup before Saturday’s game against the No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs. Instead, the 0-5 Minutemen gave the home team all it could handle in a 17-13 Volunteer win. Now, they’ll have the difficulty turned up approximately 100 notches when they host the Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. ET, broadcast live on CBS (live stream).

A freshman quarterback has the Bulldogs on the precipice of a top 5 ranking.

Georgia has emerged as the SEC East’s best possible threat to derail Alabama’s slow march toward another conference title. The Bulldogs have knocked off a pair of ranked teams — Notre Dame and Mississippi State — en route to a spot in the top 10. Freshman quarterback Jake Fromm has been solid in relief of the injured Jacob Eason, giving the team an efficient threat in the pocket — and enough to get the ‘Dawgs out to a 4-0 start.

Georgia at Tennessee news:
- Butch Jones called the media’s coverage of Tennessee “fake news,” because of course he did.
“If everyone is Vols fans, how do we let our opponents use this in the recruiting process with fake news? Sometimes, again, we have to check ourselves. What are we here for? What’s our values and principles that guide our life every single day? And I appreciate everyone in this room.
- The biggest reason for Georgia’s success is its defense. Here’s how it stifles opponents.
The Georgia Bulldogs have been trying to build a Saban-quality defense over multiple seasons, starting in 2014, when they hired former and current Saban assistant Jeremy Pruitt as defensive coordinator and culminating in 2016, when they made longtime Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart their head coach.
The Dawgs have been good on defense over this period, ranking as high as 11th in defensive S&P+ in 2015, but this season, they might be breaking into elite status, currently ranking No. 8.
- Two important starting linemen are healthy enough to get back into the Volunteer lineup this weekend.
Jones stated during a press conference that he “fully anticipates” both starting center Jashon Robertson and starting defensive tackle Shy Tuttle to play. Both players are expected to participate in a full practice session Wednesday.
The players that would miss this week’s game included wide receiver Latrell Williams, defensive back/kick returner Evan Berry, and back up tight end Jakob Johnson.
- The most important player in Georgia’s decisive win over Mississippi State? Well, there were five of them.
The clear offensive MVP for Georgia was the whole dang offensive line. Mississippi State’s vaunted front seven spent much of the night being pushed around by them on the way to giving up 203 yards on the ground. They also kept Jake Fromm’s jersey clean for most of the night, allowing the young quarterback to get comfortable in the pocket and stay that way.
Will Jake Fromm play well enough to hold on to his starting spot?
Injury pushed Fromm into the team’s starting role, but he’s been so good he may continue to top the UGA depth chart even after Jacob Eason returns to full strength. That’s a good problem for the Bulldogs to have — two talented young passers — but it may be a nightmare to manage. If Fromm struggles Saturday or later in the season, all eyes will be on head coach Kirby Smart as he determines just how much rope to give his freshman passer before turning to the bench for a replacement.
Georgia at Tennessee prediction:
Most years, Butch Jones is able to stumble through September with a handful of wins he hasn’t really earned. The Gators’ buzzer-beating bomb in Week 2 seemed to put an end to that trend. Georgia is the better team in almost all facets; that should be enough to prevent the home team from pulling off the upset.
