The Mississippi State Bulldogs’ run as a top 20 team lasted just one week after Georgia stomped out the program’s hopes for an undefeated season in a 31-3 beatdown. If the Bulldogs can’t perform better against the Auburn Tigers, they’ll fall out of the rankings entirely. Dan Mullen’s offense is rather different from the Irish attack. While MSU often plays with a tight end, it prefers to operate on the perimeter with spread-option concepts. Georgia aligned mostly in nickel and worked to deny MSU access to the perimeter.

This wide receiving core that has struggled to show up the first three weeks came to play and showed us a glimmer of that potential we all hoped to see. The offensive game plan was built around getting all the weapons involved and attacked the defense where they were vulnerable. There were zero Auburn turnovers. Those are all positive signs of change, regardless of the opponent.

Auburn’s best win of the season came against a Missouri team that had been stomped out by Purdue the week before. Mississippi State’s best was over an LSU team that seems to have been entirely overrated, and they followed that up by getting swarmed by Georgia. Were the Bulldogs a flash in the pan? Auburn’s biggest claim to being elite in 2017 is hanging tough with Clemson — which isn’t nothing. This game should be closer than the 9-point spread suggests, but home-field advantage should play a role in a close Tiger victory.
