Pregame: Hello. This stadium is nuts, ICYMI.
College football’s Week 1 comes to a close with one Monday game: The No. 25 Tennessee Volunteers against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. They’ll play at Atlanta’s massive, ornate new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the second big game there of the weekend after Saturday’s Alabama-Florida State clash. And that stadium still has the SEC Championship Game and the Playoff National Championship a few months out.
The Vols are coming off a decent, but disappointing, season. Considered the SEC East favorite in some circles, they started 5-0, including wins over divisional competition Florida and Georgia. Then everything went to hell, with a three-game losing streak costing the Vols their perch atop the division. Their year became a sideshow, and they finished 9-4 with a loss to Vanderbilt and a bowl win over Nebraska to close.
Georgia Tech was a matching 9-4, putting together a quietly effective season under coach Paul Johnson. The Jackets beat in-state rival Georgia, and they road their flexbone-option scheme to a solid offense: They avoided losses, kept the ball moving, and were able to hit on some big passing plays while defenses crashed to stop the run. It’s difficult to figure out what the Jackets will be in 2017.
