Tennessee’s offense got off to a bit of a slow start in its opener against Georgia Tech, but it wasn’t due to true freshman Trey Smith. The five-star recruit was mauling the opposition from the opening snap. Smith is creating movement and delivering punishment.
Trey Smith is wrecking people in his first game for Tennessee
Mean and beefy, Trey Smith is wasting no time making an impact for the Vols.

Tennessee has found some success running behind Smith, and having him pull. He is showing athleticism, strength, and a mean streak that many linemen don’t develop until later in their careers.
Smith was the No. 1 player in the state of Tennessee for the class of 2017, and the No. 4 offensive tackle, per the 247Sports Composite, though it should be noted that 2017 was an amazing year for offensive tackles nationally. In many other recruiting years, Smith could easily have been the top tackle recruit.
Smith was rated the top recruit in the country by ESPN, and was one of four players nationally who was rated tops overall by at least one recruiting list.
He chose Tennessee over offers from just about every major program in the country, including nearby Alabama and Georgia.
Kudos to Tennessee for utilizing Smith at guard, where he looks comfortable, as opposed to asking him to play tackle in his first-ever start. He has a 6’6, 320-pound build that can be used at either position.
If you like line play, watch Tennessee’s right guard.
