The Rice Owls narrowly avoided becoming the first FBS team of 2018 to lose to an FCS opponent. They came back from a 28-19 deficit in the fourth quarter against Prairie View A&M to win 31-28 on a 23-yard Jack Fox field goal as time expired.
Sorry, but I can’t stop giggling about the camerawork on this game-winning field goal
College football is back.

And I know that because, when I watched the game, I could vaguely see Rice players celebrating. Also I checked the box score. But here is the video:
For my money, this is going down as the definitive visual of Week 0:
I do not blame the person who zoomed a camera way out to make it almost impossible to see Rice’s game-winning kick at the exact moment it was happening. It’s Week 0 for everyone, and putting on a football TV broadcast is hard. The cameraperson probably didn’t think the broadcast was going to their camera at the time it did, and this happened.
With its win, Rice matched its 2017 win total (one) and started new head coach Mike Bloomgren’s tenure by not losing to an FCS team at home as a 23-point favorite. Helping the Owls’ comeback effort was this long snap that turned into a safety:
It’s so delightful that this sport is back.
