Lasith Malinga became the first bowler ever in the history of limited overs cricket to pick up a third hat-trick. Malinga got his third hat-trick in an ODI against Australia at the RPS in Colombo as Australia lost their last five wickets for one run to be bowled out for 211.

Sri Lanka went on to win the game by four wickets but lost the series 3-2.

Malinga had earlier got his two hat-tricks in World Cup cricket; having got four wickets off four balls against South Africa in the 2007 edition of the tournament and then dismantled the Kenyans in the 2011 World Cup with another hat-trick. Picking up four wickets off four balls is called a double hat-trick.

Malinga got rid of Mitchell Johnson (bowled), John Hastings (lbw) and Xavier Doherty (bowled) to get his hat-trick.

The other international bowlers to have got two ODI hat-tricks are Saqlain Mushtaq, Wasim Akram and Chaminda Vaas. Incidentally, Akram has also taken two hat-tricks in Test match cricket, incidentally, both within eight days of each other.
