Zimbabwe sprang a surprise on their big brothers South Africa, as the much developed team produced a clinical performance in the tri-nation T20 tournament.

After choosing to bat, the Zimbabwean openers put on 100 runs for the first wicket as the Protean bowlers struggled to produce the correct lines and lengths. Both of them scored half-centuries, and then Brendan Taylor gave the final push to the score with a quick fire innings of 38 runs. They finished with a total of 176 as none of the bowlers could exert any pressure on the opposition’s batsmen.

In reply, South Africa lost early, but through Richard Levi and Colin Ingram were on track for the chase. However, the wicket of Levi set in a series of dismissals, as none of the batsmen could contribute. Levi scored 40 while Ingram played a lone hand with the lower-order batsmen to get to 48. Chris Mpofu was the pick of the bowlers for the Zimbabweans, and he got three wickets for his efforts in his miserly spell. Richard Muzhange and Graeme Cremer, too, produced good supporting acts and were in the wickets. The South Africans ended with 147 runs as they suffered an embarrassing 29-run loss.

The win puts Zimbabwe in the driver’s seat and enhances their chances of making it to the finals, while also raising doubts about South Africa’s preparations for the T20 World Cup.
