The match between the pre-tournament favourites - West Indies and the team with so much to prove- Australia was turning out to be exactly what everyone had predicted and hoped for , till the heavy rainfall played spoiltsport. Australia beat their opponents by 17 runs through the Duckworth Lewis method in a heavy scoring contest.

After they chose to bat, West Indies started off slowly as the phenomenon that is Chris Gayle took his time to settle in. But as is his want these days, once he got the eye in, there was no stopping the big hits. Marlon Samuels matched him shot for shot as both of them scored attacking half centuries. Some lusty hitting from Dwayne Bravo too helped the side to an enormous 191 in the 20 overs. Mitchell Starc was amongst the wickets once again with figures of 3 for 35.

The West Indian bowlers though began poorly and gave away too many loose deliveries. David Warner and Shane Watson are not ones to look a gift horse in the mouth. And they took the bowling apart. Warner caned Rampaul for 22 runs in his first over before he got dismissed for 28 off 14 deliveries. Michael Hussey who joined Watson in the middle too took a shine to the West Indian attack. Watson with the help of three sixes scored 41 in 24 deliveries and with the score on 100 for 1 in 9.1 overs Australia were well on their way to chasing down a stiff target before the rain gods decided to play havoc. Play got not be resumed following the showers and Australia ended up as victors. West Indies now need to beat Ireland i ntheir final match to go through to the super eights.
