Tour de France 2013 results, Stage 3: Simon Gerrans wins first stage since 2008

For the second straight day, Peter Sagan narrowly missed winning the stage as Simon Gerrans squeaked ahead of the pack to win the third stage of the 2013 Tour de France.

It is the first stage victory for the Australian since 2008 and the first bit of good news for the Orica Greenedge team, whose previous claim to 2013 Tour de France fame involved a mishap with their bus. It was quite a different locale for Gerrans’ win, who won his first and only other stage riding through the Alps.

The 145.5-kilometer race from Ajaccio to Corsica literally came down to the last second, as Gerrans used a final push to beat Sagan by a few inches. Elsewhere in the stage, Geraint Thomas of the Sky Procycling team completed the third stage despite suffering from a cracked pelvis sustained in a crash on Saturday. Thomas finished over nine minutes behind Gerrans.

The Tour de France heads back to the mainland on Tuesday for a 25-km team time trial that begins and ends in Nice.

Full results of Monday’s race can be found on the Tour de France’s official website.
