The 100th edition of the Tour de France continued on Wednesday and British cyclist Mark Cavendish won the fifth stage of this year’s race, and his first stage win in 2013. It was the 24th stage win in Cavendish’s career, but Australian Simon Gerrans retained the yellow jersey and the lead.

Cavendish, the 2011 winner at the road world championships and a member of the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team, stayed ahead of Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen near the finish line of the 142-mile stage to take the day’s win. Stage 5 is described as being a mostly-flat run starting near Cagnes-sur-Mer and ending in Marseille.

Cavendish remains 26:50 behind Gerrans. He would be only the second British man to win the Tour de France -- the first being Bradley Wiggins just last year. Cavendish is currently in 146th place.

The Tour de France concludes on July 21, and can be seen on NBC.
