There’s no Tour de France action on Tuesday, a rest day in between the 10th and 11th stages, but the race will be short another competitor when it picks back up again on Wednesday. Fabian Cacellara announced that he’s withdrawing from the tour on Tuesday, citing the need for a break and some rest before upcoming competitions, according to Trek Factory Racing’s team website.
Fabian Cancellara withdraws from Tour de France
Cancellara announced his withdrawal from the Tour de France on Tuesday, citing a need to rest and prepare for other competitions.

Cancellara was a member of TFR, and while he joins a very stellar list of racers who started but did not finish this year’s tour, none of them chose to exit. Chris Froome, Alberto Contador, Mark Cavendish and Andy Schleck were among those who had to withdraw from the event due to crashes and injuries.
The World Championships are cited as the primary reason for Cancellara backing out of this one. “I will travel home now and take a little break,” Cancellara said. “The season has been long for me, starting back in Dubai.”
It was a solid run this year despite his departure. He finished high in the first stage, fifth stage and ninth stage and was competitive in most others. He was ranked No. 34 on time in general classification following Stage 10. Trek Factory Racing has lost multiple riders now, including the aforementioned Schleck. General Manager Luca Guercilena said in a statement that Cancellara “comes to a race to give everything,” so there’s clearly no bad blood there.
The tour will resume on Wednesday with a 187.5 km stage from Besancon to Oyonnax.
