Mark Cavendish crashes in sprint to finish in Stage 1 of Tour de France

The first day of the Tour de France could’ve been a great one for the celebrated sprinter, but instead it ended in an ugly looking crash.

The Tour de France started today -- in England, don’t ask -- and it wasn’t a good day for British fans, who saw Mark Cavendish go down as he tried to win the stage.

Cavendish, perhaps the world’s best sprinter, had hopes of a great start to the Tour. The first stage ended in his mother’s hometown, and considering the flat terrain of the first day’s racing, he had hope of winning and earning the yellow jersey for the first time in his storied career. Instead:

Cavendish took a risk trying to squeeze to the front of the pack, and it did not pay off, to say the least:

The injury looked relatively serious and could end his Tour de France.
