Tour de France 2016 results, Stage 2: Peter Sagan claims yellow jersey for 1st time

Sagan picked up his first Tour stage win in three years and will don the yellow jersey for the first time ever.

World champion Peter Sagan of Tinkoff won the second stage of the 2016 Tour de France, his first stage victory in the great race in three years. He outsprinted Julian Alaphilippe on the uphill finish to the stage in Cherbourg. It’s the first time he has ever worn the yellow jersey in his career.

Alaphilippe let the stage get away from him, same as teammate Marcel Kittel did in the first stage.

Mark Cavendish had the yellow jersey after the first stage, but he lost a lot of ground on the second stage, especially on the final climb. Sagan will take over the yellow jersey heading into Stage 3 on Monday. After two stages, Cavendish is no longer in the top 10 of the general classification standings.

Sagan was in third place following the first stage and did very well for himself on Sunday. Sagan finished the stage in 4:20:51. Sagan was the favorite going into the day, and for good reason. Alberto Contador, who suffered a nasty crash in Stage 1, continued to lose time on Sunday and is still feeling the effects of his crash. To make matters worse, he crashed again on wet roads with 120 kilometers left in the stage.

Richie Porte also lost a whole lot of time nearer the end of the stage and his race is looking bleak.

Stage results:

5. Michael Matthews
6. Wilco Kelderman
