Formula E’s 2026-2027 schedule includes a new stop in the United States, and a new race format

Next year’s Formula E season will feature the debut of the GEN4, next-generation cars. These challengers have active, all-wheel drive and possess 600 kilowatts of power (equivalent to over 815 horsepower) available to the drivers. The next-generation cars are not the only new addition to the Formula E grid, as German manufacturer Opel joins the grid.
In addition, next season will see Formula E make the series’ first visit to Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, for a race set for early February, 2027. That is one of the new circuits added to the record-breaking 21-race schedule for Formula E next season, including stops at Zandvoort and a new home in England, at the historic Brands Hatch circuit.
During a roundtable ahead of the announcement Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds told the media, including SB Nation, about the new calendar.
“So lots of familiar race locations, lots of old favorites, lots of consistency with the three new things being the introduction of Austin [and] the Circuit of the Americas, the introduction of Zandvoort in the Netherlands, and the change of location in United Kingdom from London, which has been a great home for us but is not a home that can sustain the GEN4 car to Brands Hatch, that very, very well-respected and much-loved racing circuit in the United Kingdom, about 30 minutes from London, which hopefully will become Formula E’s home for the foreseeable future,” described Dodds.
In addition, Formula E is introducing the new “E-PrixUnleashed” format, a shorter race that will be run at the eight double-header weekends across the 2026-2027 Formula E season. These “performance-focused sprint” races will last 30 minutes, allowing the drivers to run “flat out, 600 kW, in close combat racing over a slightly shorter race,” as Dobbs described.
During this shorter race, the cars will also be able to run at 600 kW “continuously,” according to Dobbs.
Marek Nawarecki, the FIA Senior Circuit Sport Director, outlined for the media including SB Nation, described the GEN4 as a “massive step forward,” and outlined how the schedule needed to adjust for the increased performance of the cars.
“So what is important to mention is that with a new generation of the Formula E car, we have a completely new technical paradigm to address, with increased power of the car to 600 kW, 700 kW in [regeneration], new bodywork, new tires,” began Nawarecki.
“That means that in terms of performance, overall performance of the car, we will do a massive step forward. This is why it was really important for us, and our teams, to adapt the format to this level of performance and to propose a different racing format for this competition.”
As the schedule currently stands, the 2026-2027 Formula E season will begin in December at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Then, following the holiday break, the grid will begin a North American swing, with stops in Mexico City, Austin, and a return to Miami and the Miami International Autodrome that winds around Hard Rock Stadium.
The grid made its debut at the Miami International Autodrome earlier this season, and leadership hailed the return in a statement on Tuesday.
“We are thrilled to bring the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship back to Miami and the incredible
Miami International Autodrome. Miami is an iconic global city that effortlessly blends sports, culture, and innovation, making it the perfect host for our championship,” said Alberto Longo, Formula E co-founder and Chief Championship Officer. “This is a world-class venue designed for unforgettable spectator experiences, and working alongside our local partners to deliver an elite street race here at the start of the season - and one of two Formula E events in the US - is a fantastic opportunity. We can’t wait to bring our unique brand of high-speed electric racing and entertainment back to the passionate fans of South Florida.”
”We are thrilled to welcome back the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to Miami Gardens in
February,” said Katherina Nowak, the President of the Miami International Autodrome. “The new GEN4 era cars are another example of how innovative Formula E has become and we are excited to bring this new generation of electric racing to motorsport fans here in South Florida.”
Three race weekends remain in the 2025-2026 Formula E season, with races in Shanghai, Tokyo, and London remaining on the docket.
