2013 Indy 500: Helio Castroneves, Dario Franchitti could make history

It’s been more than 20 years since a driver won his fourth Indy 500, but both Dario Franchitti and Helio Castroneves could accomplish the feat this year.

Dario Franchitti and Helio Castroneves have each had their fair share of success in the Indianapolis 500, but both could join an exclusive club by winning the race this year. Franchitti and Castroneves each enter the race with three Indy 500 titles to their name and both have the chance to become just the fourth person to win the Indy 500 four times.

Franchitti has won two of the last three Indy 500s, including last season. When he and Castroneves start the race, it will be the first time there have been two three-time winners in the race since 1987. Rick Mears won his fourth Indy 500 in 1991, joining A.J. Foyt and Al Unser as the only four-time winners. The chance to make history is not lost on Castroneves.

“What an incredible opportunity for the fans to have not only one but two guys trying to make history,” Castroneves said, via USA Today. “Forget about the names, forget about who it is. But imagine people who didn’t even see the last time when the guy won four times.”

While the drivers would join an exclusive club as four-time winners, if either won he would become the first driver born outside of the United States to win four times. If either Castroneves or Franchitti is able to make history on Sunday, they will have to overcome less than ideal starting position. Castroneves qualified eighth while Franchitti will start from the No. 17 slot.
