Michael Schumacher awakes from coma, leaves French hospital
The Formula One great is awake and is continuing his recovery from a December skiing accident.
The Formula One great was injured in a Dec. 29 skiing accident in the French Alps. Schumacher had been in a Grenoble hospital since the crash where he was placed in a medically induced coma to reduce swelling around his brain.
“Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation,” Sabine Kehm said. “He is not in a coma anymore. ... For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye.”
No further details were provided on Schumacher’s condition or his prognosis for recovery. The Associated Press is reporting Schumacher is now at a hospital in Switzerland, the country where he, his wife and two children live.
Schumacher was injured while skiing with his 14-year-old son when he fell and struck his head on rocks, cracking his helmet. Schumacher suffered severe head injuries in the accident, though little was known about his exact condition or recovery.
“His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months,” Kehm said.
Regarded as one of the best Formula One driver of all-time, Schumacher won a record seven World Championships and 91 races. He retired for a second time from F1 in 2012.
