Lewis Hamilton has now won back-to-back races in the Formula 1 season, last winning the Monaco Grand Prix and on Sunday taking the Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari and Valtteri Bottas of Williams. It was an exciting race that ultimately came down to a matter of pit strategy, with Hamilton hanging on for the lead on a one-stopper. Vettel went with the two-stop early, and ultimately finished under ten seconds behind Hamilton for the win.

It was a big day for Williams, who finished on the podium for the first time this season thanks to a strong run from Valterri Bottas.

It’s now a nine-point gap for Hamilton in the championship points.
It’s the second straight race that Nico Rosberg has lost position almost immediately in the race. Rosberg tried to go outside on Hamilton going into the first corner, but Hamilton rarely gives up those kinds of overtakes and he was already being taken on the inside by Vettel. So Rosberg was forced off the track, and fell back into 10th place from second.
Rosberg did a bit of overtaking, making his way past Fernando Alonso and others, but found himself stuck behind the Mercedes-powered Williams of Valtteri Bottas. Eventually, Bottas managed to get himself past Ricciardo’s Red Bull, and Rosberg was tasked with taking down the Tag Heuer-branded Red Bull. It only took a lap before he overtook Ricciardo with DRS assistance.
Unfortunately, a puncture forced an early, unexpected pit for Rosberg, and when he came back out on lap 53, he was in seventh place. He eventually moved up into sixth and, with fresh tires, he began stalking Kimi Raikkonen in fifth. By lap 58, he easily took Raikkonen and moved back up into fifth place. That is where he eventually finished, almost completely ruining his race by spinning out on the final lap while trying to overtake Max Verstappen.
Jenson Button was the first driver out of the race, when his McLaren engine quit and caught fire early on. He pulled to the side and a virtual safety car was deployed while his car was removed from the track. Jolyon Palmer continued his points-less streak and had to retire his Renault as well.
There were no further retirements until lap 37, when Felipe Massa surprisingly pulled in for an early pit stop and had his Williams retired. This was Massa’s first non-points finish of the year, a massive disappointment for the veteran. Fortunately, those three were the only drivers to retire from the race.
Carlos Sainz deserves some credit for the race he ran. He was rarely in the big battles throughout the circuit, but he took his car from 20th on the grid to finish ninth, within the points. Neither Haas F1 driver managed to finish in the points, with Esteban Gutierrez finishing at No. 13 and Romain Grosjean at No. 14. Bottas’ podium finish was the first one of the season for Williams.
