Once again, it’s a Mercedes front row lock out, and for the second straight race, Nico Rosberg is ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg, despite bailing out on his first lap in the third qualifying session due to an electronics issue. But Rosberg trails Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship by six points, a gap that was created when Hamilton took the victory in Hungary last week.

Nico Rosberg is ahead of Lewis Hamilton on the grid going into Sunday’s German Grand Prix.

Sunday’s Formula 1 German Grand Prix from the Hockenheimring will begin at 8 a.m. ET and will be broadcast live on NBCSN. There will also be a live stream available via NBC Sports.
It’s been a crazy season for Mercedes, who have only been pushed by the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull in a handful of races, but who have gotten in each other’s way multiple times. The two have crashed into one another multiple times this season and while there is plenty of season left, neither driver wants to let the other separate too far.
The start should be interesting, especially with the Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen just behind them. Those same Red Bulls have pushed the Mercedes head-to-head this season, but sometimes struggle getting past the Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel, who occupy the third row behind them.
Whether or not anybody will challenge Mercedes should be clear early on in the race.
Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa of Williams are both starting in the top 10 as well, with Bottas slotted in at seventh and Massa at 10th. The Force Indias of Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez will also round out the top 10. Hulkenberg is starting eighth after getting a one-place grid penalty for using tires he wasn’t supposed to during qualifying on Saturday.
Romain Grosjean of Haas will start in 20th due to a five-place gearbox change penalty, with teammate Esteban Gutierrez up in 11th place. Unfortunately the McLarens of Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso both missed the third qualifying session and will start on the sixth and seventh rows. Rio Haryanto of Manor -- who may or may not be racing his final race as he doesn’t have a contract beyond Germany.
