Sebastian Vettel is still your leader atop the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings, but he has plenty of challengers. Lewis Hamilton remains in second despite finishing in fourth at the Russian Grand Prix on Sunday.

It’s Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes who made the biggest gains on Sunday, going from third place on the starting grid to first place on the podium. Bottas ran a brilliant race and even managed to hold off a hard-charging Vettel on much fresher tires down the stretch of the race.

Bottas is here, and he’s here to stay. We know he can take it to Hamilton, his teammate, and we know he can hold off a brilliant drive from someone like Vettel.

Kimi Raikkonen is in fourth in the standings while Max Verstappen of Red Bull comes in fifth. Unfortunately, Daniel Ricciardo couldn’t improve from fifth, as he did not finish the race and is now tied for fifth with the Force India of Sergio Perez.

As far as the Constructors Championship goes, it’s obviously down to Mercedes and Ferrari at this stage.

Fernando Alonso did not manage to start the race, as his car came to a stop on the formation lap. Jolyon Palmer of Renault and Romain Grosjean of Haas were the next two out, when they collided and hit the wall on the second lap of the race. At that point, both Lance Stroll and Nico Hulkenberg collided as well, but both remained in the race.

The next driver to lose out was Ricciardo, who had his brakes catch on fire not long after the Lap 2 safety car went back in. Once that kind of thing happens to the fluid in the brakes, there’s not much that can be done.

Kevin Magnussen of Haas was given a five-second time penalty for going off track and rejoining inappropriately while avoiding crashes on Lap 2. Magnussen argued the penalty, but ultimately had to serve it. At the time of the penalty, Magnussen was in the points.

Following his pit stop, including the penalty, he ended up 13th. That’s where he finished, so Haas was unable to earn points.
