Lewis Hamilton will lead off the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, and the Mercedes driver has Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari as company next to him. It will be another Mercedes vs. Ferrari showdown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Formula 1 2017: Starting grid, lineup for Spanish Grand Prix
The Spanish Grand Prix is here and another big Ferrari vs. Mercedes battle is brewing.

Sunday’s race will begin bright and early for those watching in the United States, with coverage beginning at 8 a.m. ET. The race will be broadcast by NBCSN in the US, and will be live streamed online via NBC Sports Live.
Valtteri Bottas had out-qualified his teammate, Hamilton, over the past two races but will start from third on Sunday, next to Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari. And while Ferrari will be disappointed that Vettel couldn’t take pole, things were much closer to falling apart altogether.
Vettel’s car had an engine change at the last minute and during his very first qualifying run, his engineer instructed him to stop the car because they were seeing something bad in the telemetry. Vettel asked his engineer if he was absolutely sure, slowing down in the process, because once a car stops they cannot go back out.
The car recovered and Vettel continued the session, and starts from second on the grid as a result.
“They did an engine change sub two hours,” Vettel said. “So if you ever see the car stripped, there’s a lot of bits and bobs that need to be disconnected, so it’s a miracle that they got me out. Would’ve been nice to get them the pole but hopefully we can do well tomorrow.”
Behind the frontrunners are Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull, and then behind them is Fernando Alonso of McLaren. It’s been an awful season for McLaren, with tons of engine issues and it’s a near miracle that Alonso made it into the third qualifying session. He’ll start seventh on the grid.
It was a rough weekend for Lance Stroll of Williams, who once again did not make it out of the first qualifying session. Stroll has had a very rough season thus far, and will start near the back of the grid in Spain. His teammate, Felipe Massa, made it into the top 10 and will start ninth on the grid.
On either side of Massa are Force India cars, with Sergio Perez in eighth and Esteban Ocon rounding out the top 10 with the final spot. The American-owned Haas team didn’t make it out of the second qualifying session.
