Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes won the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix and earned a cool 25 points in the Drivers’ Championship on Sunday. He and Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari have exchanged the lead a couple of times, and after Sunday’s race, it’s as close as it gets.
F1 2017: New points standings after Spanish Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes made the battle against Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari much more interesting on Sunday.

Hamilton now has 98 points on the season, while Vettel picked up 18 points from second place to move to a total of 104 points. Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull had a quiet drive but finished in third place and picked up 15 points.
He moved ahead of his teammate Max Verstappen in the standings as a result.
Mercedes had a narrow lead in the Constructors’ Championship going into Sunday’s grand prix, and now it has increased its lead over Ferrari. Haas lost out on some points for Kevin Magnussen when he suffered a puncture on the penultimate lap.
Force India continues its strong season with finishes in fourth and fifth for Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon.
Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari and Verstappen of Red Bull collided as part of a major Turn 1 crash on the opening lap, and both cars were retired from there. It was a hugely disappointing exit for the two, who are still competing for the Drivers’ Championship. Raikkonen will now have a tougher time keeping up with Mercedes and his Ferrari teammate Vettel.
Verstappen will have trouble competing with teammate Ricciardo and keeping up with the top two teams. Raikkonen was tapped by Bottas, which is what sent him into Verstappen.
Bottas suffered his own problems much later in the race, as he experienced engine problems while running in third place and had to stop. That will certainly help Vettel and Hamilton narrow the Drivers’ Championship to a two-person battle.
Fernando Alonso of McLaren qualified in seventh on the grid, a huge surprise given his team’s engine troubles this season. But he went off the track around the first turn and dropped from seventh to 11th, hurting his chances of putting up points for a struggling team.
His teammate Stoffel Vandoorne crashed into Massa on Lap 34 and had to retire from the race, so he did not score any points — not that any were expected. Alonso raced well and made some passes, but ultimately his McLaren was not enough to put him into the points, though he did see a checkered flag for the first time this season.
