Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes set a Circuit Gilles Villeneuve record in the third qualifying session for the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton posted a time under 1:12 for his lap and then beat the record that he’d just set with a final time of 1:11.459 to take pole position for Sunday’s race.
Formula 1 2017: Starting grid, lineup for Canadian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton will have Sebastian Vettel keeping him company in the front row at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The race is on at a decent time in the United States thanks to the North American setting. It will be broadcast by NBC beginning at 2 p.m. ET and will be streamed live online via NBC Sports on top of that.
Hamilton looked incredible on the track Saturday. It’s a great thing for him, as he had some bad luck in Monaco and didn’t even make it to the final qualifying session. On Saturday, Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, who took the win in Monaco, looked great as well but just missed out on Hamilton’s time by 0.004 seconds.
Fernando Alonso of McLaren is back for this race after he skipped the Monaco Grand Prix to race in the Indy 500. McLaren has had a ton of reliability issues with the Honda-powered engine and, unsurprisingly, Alonso did not finish the Indy 500 due to Honda having reliability issues in that sport as well.
Jenson Button made the start for Alonso in Monaco but returns to the retired life as Alonso returns to Formula 1. Alonso made it to the second qualifying session, but no further, and will start from 12th on the grid.
Stoffel Vandoorne, Lance Stroll, Kevin Magnussen, Marcus Ericsson, and Pascal Wehrlein all were eliminated in the first qualifying session. Wehrlein went off the track and into the wall near the end of the session, forcing several drivers to abandon their second attempts at a qualifying lap.
The second session saw Daniil Kvyat suffer a puncture, but he still put in a good enough time to qualify 11th on the grid. He, Alonso, Carlos Sainz, Romain Grosjean and Jolyon Palmer all were eliminated in the second qualifying session.
