Mercedes picked up a cool 25 points with Valtteri Bottas’ race win for the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, and they picked up a few more with Lewis Hamilton finishing in fourth. The Constructors Championship is definitely going their way.
F1 2017: New points standings after Austrian Grand Prix
Mercedes increased their lead in the Constructors Championship while Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel improved his standing in the Drivers.

The Drivers Championship is another story. Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari didn’t get max points to extend his lead, but due to a five-place grid penalty for Hamilton, Vettel did improve his 14-point lead over Hamilton by securing 18 points to Hamilton’s 12 on Sunday.
Romain Grosjean of the American-owned Haas team earned eight points on the day with one of his best finishes of the season. Unfortunately, his teammate Kevin Magnussen had to retire from the race, preventing the team from making big gains in the Constructors Championship.
Both Williams and Force India saw double-points finishes, but they were all occupying the back four spots, with Force India earning 10 points and Williams earning three.
The opening turn of the race saw two cars eliminated. Max Verstappen of Red Bull got a bad start while Fernando Alonso of McLaren got a great start. Unfortunately, both had to retire from the race after Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso locked his brakes and crashed into Alonso. That sent Alonso into Verstappen, and both retired.
Kevin Magnussen of Haas was having a good race, but he had to retire the car on Lap 30 due to some kind of failure. Around that time, pit stops started for the front-runners. Hamilton was first, fitting the ultra softs. Bottas, the race leader, retook the lead shortly after his pit stop, and Raikkonen was brought in last, coming out in fifth behind Hamilton.
Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso became the fourth car to retire from the race around Lap 46 with a car issue. With that retirement and Kvyat’s Lap 1 issues, Toro Rosso gained nothing in the Constructors Championship.
McLaren had a bad day with Alonso’s retirement, and on Lap 45 Stoffel Vandoorne was given a drive-through penalty for failing to adhere to blue flags. Such a penalty amounts to around 20 seconds of missed race time, taking Vandoorne from the fringes of the points to essentially out of the running.
