The Formula One Italian Grand Prix is set for Sunday, and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes has pole position for the 69th time in his career, breaking the career mark of Michael Schumacher, who finished with 68 poles.
F1 Italy 2017: Starting grid, lineup for Grand Prix race
Lewis Hamilton has pole position for the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton will have Lance Stroll of Williams and Esteban Ocon of Force India rounding out the top three thanks to a rainy qualifying session that shook up the front of the grid. His Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, will round out the second row from fourth position on the grid.
Sunday’s race will begin at 8 a.m. ET and will be broadcast by NBCSN in the United States. As usual, a live stream of the race can be found online at NBC Sports in web browsers or via the NBC Sports app on connected devices.
Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari comprise the third row, though they qualified lower in the top 10. Penalties allow them to get a bit closer to the Mercedes drivers they are chiefly competing with. Vettel holds a narrow lead over Hamilton in the Drivers Championship standings.
More than 100 grid place penalties are being handed out for Sunday’s grand prix, all of them having to do with various engine changes beyond what is allowed under the rules. Those rules are ostensibly in place to prevent the richer teams from changing engines frequently and getting a competitive edge, but for this race, all they’re doing is muddying up the grid.
Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull finished qualifying second and third, respectively, but will start near the back of the grid due to penalties.
Verstappen was given a 20-place grid penalty while his teammate, Ricciardo, was given a 25-place grid penalty. Nico Hulkenberg of Renault and Carlos Sainz Jr. had 10-place grid penalties, Jolyon Palmer of Renault has a 15-place grid penalty, while Fernando Alonso of McLaren has a 35-place grid penalty. Romain Grosjean of Haas will start from the very back of the grid after crashing in the first qualifying session.
“It probably won’t sink in for a long time,” Hamilton said of his new pole record. He commented that it was one of the tougher qualifying sessions of his career, but he kept his Mercedes in line and now he has a solid chance at taking the lead in the Drivers Championship standings.
