Should I start or sit Brian Robinson and Isaac Guerendo with Christian McCaffrey banged up in Week 1?

11:17 a.m. ET update: Adam Schefter is reporting McCaffrey will play in Week 1, with a source reporting “he’s good to go.” He’s the player to start in fantasy football with Robinson and Guerendo more lottery tickets with some upside. If you only have those two as options, Guerendo makes a little more sense in standard leagues while Robinson makes a little more sense in PPR leagues.

The San Francisco 49ers had some unexpected injury news this week that will be something to track heading into their opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Running back Christian McCaffrey practiced in full on Wednesday, but then was listed as limited on Thursday with a calf injury. He did not practice on Friday and was listed as questionable on the final injury report.

Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday afternoon that McCaffrey is expected to play in Week 1, but given his injury history, there are plenty of red flags. That opens the door for backups Brian Robinson and Isaac Guerendo. Below, we’ll go over their respective outlooks in fantasy football for Week 1.

Guerendo entered training camp as the clear No. 2 back in the 49ers backfield after the departure of Jordan Mason. That changed in a hurry when the 49ers acquired Robinson in a trade with the Washington Commanders. The deal happened on August 22, which means Robinson is still getting up to speed on the playbook. We know Kyle Shanahan cycles through his running backs plenty, and CMC has a notable injury history. It’s a decent bet Robinson and Guerendo both end up getting spot starts this season. And even if they don’t, both will see some value in deeper leagues.

If McCaffrey ends up getting scratched for this game, Robinson is likely the better start. Guerendo is a decent option in a touchdown heavy leagues. He could see some goal line work while Robinson likely ends up with more passing down work. Robinson would be a strong start and Guerendo would be a decent start with some upside.

If McCaffrey does not get scratched, Robinson would be the better PPR start, while Guerendo actually might be the better standard start. If Guerendo gets some goal line work to spell McCaffrey, he could be an interesting touchdown vulture.
