Beanie Wells Injury Update: Cardinals Running Back Expected To Miss One To Two Weeks

Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells injured his knee in Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the latest reports indicate he could miss one to two weeks with a bone bruise. Following the game, Wells was diagnosed with a knee sprain, which can mean a whole host of injury possibilities. Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt was unsure of whether it was a short or long term injury, and it was the same knee on which Wells had surgery a year ago. Fortunately though, the worst has been avoided with this reported diagnosis.

In the short term, the Cardinals will roll out some combination of Alfonso Smith and LaRod Stephens-Howling. Although LSH was higher on the depth chart, Smith got more carries after Wells left Sunday's game. Of course, that involved a robust five carries for Smith. He did manage a touchdown, but it was not an inspiring effort.

Things do not get any easier for the Cardinals this coming week as they travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens and their top-ranked defense. The Cardinals do face the woeful St. Louis Rams in two weeks, but it is possible Wells will be back by then. I would not waste quality waiver positioning or decent players for either Smith or Stephens-Howling. Any strong performances from them the next week or two would be unpredictable and somewhat flukish.
