Fantasy Football Bye Week 5: Quarterback Waiver Wire Fill-Ins

Week five of the 2011 NFL season is upon us, which means the league enters its first round of bye weeks. Week Five byes include the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins. For the purposes of the quarterback position, the following players are on bye:

Joe Flacco
Colt McCoy
Tony Romo
Sam Bradford
Rex Grossman

The Miami Dolphins aren’t included because nobody has Matt Moore on their roster. That’s not to say many people have Rex Grossman, but there are some folks who are a glutton for punishment. The two biggest names on bye are Joe Flacco and Tony Romo. While not spectacular quarterbacks, both have done enough in recent years to warrant a starting spot in most leagues.

Most folks have likely drafted two quarterbacks, but if you had not grabbed a second quarterback, there are some intriguing options that could be on your waiver wire. If I had to name one guy that is almost definitely available in your league, I would actually strongly suggest picking up 49ers QB Alex Smith for this week's 49ers-Buccaneers game. If you think I'm kidding, I am not.

I'd be surprised if anybody has ever started Alex Smith in a fantasy football league that was not an 16+ team league, but he is starting to put together some decent numbers that could have some fantasy value. In the 49ers comeback against Philadelphia, Smith finished 21/33 for 291 yards and two touchdowns. More importantly, he had no interceptions and has only thrown two interceptions since last October 10. If he avoids multiple turnovers in a game, modest numbers suddenly look decent. Add in what Curtis Painter did to the Bucs defense and he is a quality play this week.
