Week five of the 2011 NFL season is upon us, which means the league enters its first round of bye weeks. Week Five byes include the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins. For the purposes of the tight end position, the following players are on bye:
Fantasy Football Bye Week 5: Tight End Waiver Wire Fill-Ins
It’s not a particularly tough bye week for tight ends, but for those who have Jason Witten or Fred Davis, you’ll be looking for another option. Tight end is always a bit of a funky position with some consistently great players and then a whole lot of inconsistent options. You find yourself considering head-to-head matchups, but at the end of the day there is a lot of luck involved when it comes to finding a bye-week fill-in at tight end.
One suggestion I can offer to decrease the luck and increase the serious analysis would be to check out Football Outsiders defensive efficiency page. At the bottom it breaks down team defense versus various types of receivers in the passing game. They break down how teams fare against various wide receivers and also running backs and tight ends.
It is noteworthy that Pittsburgh has been fairly crummy against tight ends. Maybe you want to grab Jared Cook if he is available. Indianapolis has also been bad against tight ends. Maybe Kansas City's Leonard Pope is out there. I realize this isn't the best advice, but when you get past the 12-14 tight ends in most leagues combined with a few teams holding backup tight ends, you're left primarily with scraps.
