Fantasy Football Week 2: Sleepers Include Saints’ Robert Meachem

Some sleepers that could benefit your fantasy football team in Week 2.

So you've got your fantasy team set up and you've made it through week one, regardless of whether you won or lost, it's a long season and it's just getting started. There are some things to be concerned about, though. Maybe you drafted Peyton Manning early in the draft just to find out he wouldn't be around much this season. Or maybe you selected Chris Johnson with the first overall pick just to get nine carries for 24 yards in week one. It's also possible that, after watching Dwayne Bowe explode in 2010, that you took him in hopes that he would continue to catch touchdown passes week after week just to watch him catch two passes for 17 yards.

If you’re in a situation that calls for some maneuvering heading into week two, here are some ideas for players that may be available on the waiver wire in your respective leagues.

We’ll start with quarterbacks...

Rex Grossman QB Washington Redskins

If you're in need of a new quarterback heading into week two and you don't know what to do, you could look Grossman's way. Last week he completed 21 of 34 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns. That was against their division rivals, the New York Giants. This week he'll be staying in Washington to take on the Arizona Cardinals, who allowed rookie Cam Newton to throw for 403 yards and two touchdowns last week. Grossman could have another good week.

Cam Newton QB Carolina Panthers

Speaking of Cam Newton. I wouldn't necessarily promote starting a rookie quarterback on your fantasy team, but not every rookie quarterback is Cam Newton are they? Newton broke records in his first NFL start. Yes, he's facing the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers but he'll be at home and he'll likely be playing from behind most of the game. Oh yeah, he's a threat to run touchdowns as well as throwing them.

Running backs:

Cadillac Williams RB St. Louis Rams

It's unlikely that Steven Jackson will be playing on Monday night thanks to a strained quad. After Jackson left the game last week against the Eagles, Williams came in and played well, rushing for 91 yards on 19 carries and he added five receptions for 49 yards. Even if Jackson does play, the Rams will likely take it easy on him. I'm not saying put him as your top running back, but he might not make a bad flex play this week.

Darren Sproles RB New Orleans Saints

Yeah, he didn't do much carrying the ball. He only carried the ball twice for seven yards, but he did make seven receptions for 75 yards and in PPR leagues, that's not too shabby. On top of that he returned a punt for a touchdown. Without Marques Colston, Sproles may get even more targets.

Wide Receivers:

Robert Meachem WR New Orleans Saints

Both Marques Colston and Lance Moore are injured this week and the Saints are a pass-first team. Drew Brees is notorious for spreading the ball around to every receiver equally but without Colston or Moore, Meachem could clean up against the Bears.

Devery Henderson WR New Orleans Saints

Sticking with the Saints, if you couldn’t get Meachem, you may want to take a look at Henderson. He’s a boom-or-bust receiver usually but with both Colston and Moore injured, he could rack up some solid points. He’s also coming off a 100-yard performance against the Packers in which he scored a touchdown. He could have a similar game against the Bears.

Tight Ends:

Jermaine Gresham TE Cincinnati Bengals

Yes, Gresham will be thrown to by a rookie and yes, it's the Bengals. However, a rookie's best friend is usually a good tight end and Gresham has a ton of tallent when it comes to catching the ball. If the Bengals offensive line can keep the Broncos' Von Miller away from Dalton, Gresham, who is a red zone mismatch from hell, could have a great game.

Scott Chandler TE Buffalo Bills

Talk about surprising performances. Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four touchdown passes against the Chiefs last week and two of those touchdowns went to Chandler. If he's available and you have Dallas Clark minus Peyton Manning on your team, you may want to grab Chandler before somebody else does.

Defenses:

Detroit Lions

The Lions are hosting the Chiefs, who looked awful last week against the Bills. The Lions recovered one fumble and intercepted a pass in Tampa Bay against the Buccaneers last week. They're also going to be playing at home and if the Chiefs look the way they did last week, the Lions could add some points for your team.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals again? Yes. The Broncos couldn't stop turning the ball over against the Raiders on Monday Night Football. Kyle Orton was sacked five times, the Raiders recovered two fumbles and intercepted one pass. The Bengals have a very talented defense. If Carlos Dunlap and Michael Johnson can find their way to Orton, Leon Hall and Nate Clements could benefit greatly. So could you.
