Perhaps the most compelling position battle in the Carolina Panthers camp is shaping up at placekicker between Olindo Mare and Justin Medlock. Mare is the incumbent, but is being pushed by Medlock, who has kicked very well in training camp so far. Mare has also been good at times, but is still inconsistent. The Panthers play Saturday against the Houston Texans.

Analysis: Cam Newton and the Panthers scored a lot of points last season, and whichever player wins the job should be a good fantasy bet in most weeks during the regular season. Obviously, performance during the preseason games will play a big role in the competition, so makes and misses in practice probably won’t count as much as the regular season gets closer. Don’t forget about this position battle on draft day, as Carolina’s starter could get you off to a solid start.
