Stevie Johnson injury update: WR listed as probable, will be available for fantasy owners

The Buffalo Bills wide receiver practiced on Friday and is set to start in Week 9. We break down the fantasy implications.

Andy Lyons

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson (hip) practiced on Friday and is listed as probable for the team's Week 9 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson got in a limited practice on Thursday and isn't in any danger of missing time this week though he likely won't be 100 percent healthy.

Fantasy Impact: Looking past his hip issue, Johnson's main fantasy obstacle is the fact that he will likely be without fill-in quarterback Thad Lewis (ribs, flu). Both quarterbacks Matt Flynn and the undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel split first-team reps in practice. Tuel is more likely to draw the start. Lewis wasn't turning many heads in his few starts but he is a significantly better option than Tuel or Flynn. Johnson was injury for Lewis's first start in Week 6 but managed to post lines of 6/61/0 and 7/72/1 in Weeks 7 and 8 respectively.

While owners could live with his WR3 production in recent weeks, expectations need to be significantly lowered with Tuel or Flynn under center. Facing the Chiefs’ stout defense, Buffalo is likely to lean heavily on the run game. Although he remains the team’s top receiving threat, Johnson will be a low-end WR3.
