Santonio Holmes reportedly says he could at least miss four games, fantasy owners must look elsewhere

The Jets are looking for a reliable receiver to play opposite of Jeremy Kerley this season, but it appears that Holmes could miss the first quarter of the year. How detrimental is his absence to the Jets offense?

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Jets receiver Santonio Holmes is trying to work his way back from a Lisfranc injury, but has reportedly told friends that he will miss at least the first four games of the season. The injury forced Holmes to miss 12 games last year and the Jets passing offense struggled more in 2012 than it had in any of the previous years with Mark Sanchez and head coach Rex Ryan.

Holmes, currently on the preseason physically-unable-to-perform list, played in four games for New York last year and caught 20 passes for 272 yards. He played a full season in 2011 and caught 51 passes for 654 yards and eight touchdowns for the Jets.

Being on the preseason PUP list does not prevent Holmes from missing any games, but if the Jets transfer him to the regular season PUP list, he will be forced to miss a minimum of six games. According to reports of what Holmes has said himself, he will miss at least four.

Fantasy Impact: It’s hard to convince anyone that they should hitch their fantasy wagon to anyone on the Jets. Though it seems like he has been in the league forever, Holmes is only 29-years-old and was on pace for 80 catches and over 1,000 yards last year before going down with injury.

But it appears that the Lisfranc is still very bothersome and that it is safer to just stay away from Holmes until he’s officially back on the field. If he is out for a significant period of time, second-year receiver Stephen Hill will need to stay healthy and be more consistent, and could be an interesting sleeper pick.
