San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates did not practice on Friday, according to San Diego Union-Tribune's Michael Gehlken.
Antonio Gates shaping up to be game-time decision for Chargers, fantasy owners
The Chargers may be without their start tight end once again on Sunday, but this time it would be due to injury. We break down the fantasy implications.
This marks the third straight day Gates has not practiced, although head coach Mike McCoy said earlier in the week that the 35-year-old veteran could play even if he did not take the practice field. However, preparation is not Gates' concern. His knee is the problem after Gates was brought down awkwardly on the final drive of Week 6's loss to the Green Bay Packers. Gates has not been ruled out, but will be likely a game-time decision.
Fantasy impact: It's awful news for Gates' owners, who have enjoyed brilliant production from him, and could miss out on starting him in the most favorable of all matchups against the Oakland Raiders. With the Chargers 4:05 p.m. ET start time, fantasy owners may not have a choice but to start their backup option before hearing the final word on Gates' availability.
If Gates plays, even at less than 100 percent, he is firmly in the TE1 conversation against a Raiders defense that has allowed the most fantasy points per game to tight ends. If Gates sits, Ladarius Green could be in for a banner day, but also deserves TE1/TE2 consideration if the veteran takes the field.
