Despite Andrew Luck being out with a shoulder injury, Coby Fleener thrived without his former college teammate distributing the ball on Sunday.
Fantasy football start/sit Week 5: Coby Fleener
The Colts got welcome production from their tight end last Sunday, but can it happen in Week 5? We break down the fantasy implications.
Fleener caught nine passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, and finished second on the team with 12 targets. Dwayne Allen was also out of action, paving the way for Fleener to monopolize snaps from the tight end position. With Matt Hasselbeck under center, it was reasonable to expect him to need a reliable check-down option, which is exactly what Fleener provided to the veteran quarterback.
Fantasy impact: The NFL, however, is a crazy league, which sees rapid changes from week to week, and Fleener’s fantasy prospects for Week 5 become muddled because of them. Luck won’t be as prone to checking down as much as Hasselbeck was, and Allen could also return from an ankle injury. Allen missed Week 4’s contest, but got in two limited practice sessions in preparation for it.
If Allen and Luck are both starting, Fleener won't see an every-down role and will likely have a quarterback who will look elsewhere for targets against a vulnerable Houston Texans defense. Fleener will be in the TE2 range if that reigns true.
