Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said Thursday that running back Zach Zenner could get more carries, even upon Joique Bell's return.
Zach Zenner could get carries even if Joique Bell returns, fantasy value remains long-term
The Lions undrafted rookie received high praise from his offensive coordinator on Thursday. We break down the fantasy implications.
Zenner lit up the preseason but hasn't been involved much in the offense even though Bell has missed time. Ameer Abdullah is still the starter in Detroit's backfield, but it's evident that Lions brass would like to take the weight off Abdullah's shoulders if possible. Zenner's role in Week 4's loss to the Seahawks was of the change-of-pace variety, carrying the ball twice for just nine yards while adding a four-yard catch.
Fantasy impact: Lombardi’s words should be parsed, and it should be noted that “could” does not mean “will” in regard to Zenner garnering more carries. With his share in the backfield already so low with Bell out, it can’t be assumed that Zenner will have any fantasy relevance unless Abdullah were to miss time as well.
For now, Zenner is on the handcuff radar, but too many factors would need to change in order for him to become worthy of being placed into lineups. Abdullah remains the running back in Detroit for fantasy owners to have.
