Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah will have a growing role in the team's offense, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
Ameer Abdullah’s role will grow, per report, has little immediate fantasy value
The Lions’ rookie running back hasn’t produced at the rate many anticipated. We break down the fantasy implications.
This report stems from the words of offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who blamed game script for the reasoning behind Abdullah's lack of use in the team's 45-10 defeat at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs. Abdullah had just one touch on offense and remained the team's kick returner throughout the game, but lost snaps to Joique Bell and Theo Riddick.
Fantasy impact: Even if Cooter claims that Abdullah’s role will grow with Cooter now calling plays, a game where the rookie carries the ball twice would technically prove that statement true. As a result, it shouldn’t instill much confidence in any fantasy owner who likely spent a fifth- or sixth-round pick on the speedy running back.
As long as Riddick and Bell remain in the fold, and there’s no indication that they won’t, Abdullah isn’t worth starting consideration in 12-team leagues. His fantasy value will likely be tied to 2016 and beyond.
