Fantasy Impact: Smith is the Jets’ 2015 second-round draft pick. He played his college football as a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes and was a key contributor to the team’s championship season last year.
As it stands now, there are quite a number of receivers ahead of Smith on the depth chart. That could have something to do with the fact that he missed training camp and the start of the regular season recovering from broken ribs and a broken leg. His NFL debut may see Smith play a limited role just to ease him back into things.
Fantasy owners may want to look at the rookie in deeper leagues as a player worth stashing on the roster until he can play regularly and produce some sort of tangible results. The biggest positive is that most NFL teams tend to use second-round draft picks on players with lots of potential, so Smith could be a midseason breakout candidate that few expected coming into 2015.
