Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said Monday that running back Ryan Mathews will remain the starter and join the running rotation once healthy, according to Zach Berman of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Mathews took only eight snaps in the Eagles’ Week 3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported the Pro Bowler’s ankle stiffened at some point in the first quarter. The Eagles elected to sit Mathews for the remainder of the game, and Wendell Smallwood and Kenjon Barner split up carries the rest of the game.

Smallwood had 17 to Barner’s eight. Mathews has been dealing with an ankle issue since training camp. There is no indication yet that he will be unable to play Week 5 in Detroit, after the Eagles bye.

Fantasy Spin: The Eagles’ bye week could not be more timely for Mathews. This does not appear to be a severe injury for Matthews, however, it is nagging and that means his ability to play is limited.

The Eagles are very deep at running back, so Mathews may not get as much action in the rushing committee system. Keep an eye on Smallwood and Barner on your waiver wire heading into the bye week.
