Daniel Ricciardo addresses his uncertain future ahead of F1 Dutch Grand Prix

As Formula 1 entered the summer shutdown speculation swirled around Sergio Pérez. With the Red Bull driver enduring a difficult run of form and the team facing a true title challenge in the Constructors’ Championship, many believed the break offered Red Bull a chance to make a driver swap, perhaps promoting Daniel Ricciardo into that seat to solidify their chances at holding on atop the standings.

While Red Bull decided against such a move, committing to Pérez as the shutdown began, Ricciardo admitted on Thursday at the Dutch Grand Prix that the possibility of such a promotion did cross his mind.

“I didn’t rule it out,” said Ricciardo to Sky Sports F1 at Zandvoort on the prospects of replacing Pérez at Red Bull. “I thought maybe something could happen but I also didn’t expect it or get my hopes up.

“I was aware ‘maybe something changes’, but I just thought: ‘Do what I’m doing and if I get a call, I get a call.’ I didn’t get a call but that’s what I mentally prepared myself for.”

While Ricciardo did not get the call he was preparing for, now his thoughts turn to keeping his current seat, rather than moving up in the Red Bull family. While Visa Cash App RB F1 Team announced earlier this season that Yuki Tsunoda would be back next year, they have not solidified the second seat for 2025.

Both Ricciardo and reserve driver Liam Lawson are in the fold for that spot, and at the start of August Red Bull senior advisor Dr. Helmut Marko hinted at a 2025 role for Lawson. “It’s a tough time for someone like Liam, especially as he jumped into the car under very, very difficult circumstances and did very well. We rate him high and he will get his chance,” said Marko earlier this month. “Just wait. September, you will have an answer.”

Might that mean Ricciardo is out, and Lawson is in, next season?

“I have every opportunity in front of me and that’s the beauty, it’s up to me,” Ricciardo told Sky Sports F1. “Yes, there is always pressure from myself, and that of the Red Bull system, but I know if I do a job, I will have a seat and somewhere to race.”

Still, Ricciardo — who tested at Imola over the break alongside Lawson — has been impressed with the reserve driver.

“I got to see Liam drive the car last year and I think he did a great job and is worthy of a seat on the grid,” added Ricciardo. “In a way, I’m happy for him. If he’s guaranteed a seat on the grid next year, that’s good because he is a deserving driver.

“What that means for me is probably a bit unknown but if I perform, they will find a spot for me somewhere!”
